Sts. John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues & Companions

Our Lady of the Fields-3 (1)

From today’s Scripture: “Everything indeed is for you, so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more and more people may cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God.” —2 Cor 4:15

Each of us is called to be a missionary. That is Christian tradition; and it is the wisdom of Father William Howard Bishop. Today we celebrate his founding of Glenmary Home Missioners in 1939, 85 years ago. He chose the North American Jesuit Martyrs as Glenmary’s patrons because they were the first Catholic missioners to this continent.

Father John de Brebeuf and companions tirelessly gave their lives to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth. They suffered privation along the way, and even suffered martyrdom at the end. Our members surely don’t expect martyrdom, but they know they will endure privation along the way as they stand with God’s people in the rural counties we serve.

Let us pray: Thank you, God, for 85 years of Glenmary ministry. Thank you for the gift of your word, the gift of the Eucharist, the gift of all of us to each other in the Christian community. Today, give me a thankful heart. Help me to serve your word.
