From today’s Scripture: “Jesus said…‘They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise.’”—Lk 20:34,36
In today’s Gospel, once again, the Sadducees try to trip Jesus by asking a question that is contrived to embarrass Jesus, not seek a sincere answer. Jesus recognizes that the Sadducees are locked into thinking about their worldly existence. Jesus makes it clear that we need to look beyond the physical world. He doesn’t even bother to directly answer this trick question, he tells them that the post-resurrection world will be different from anything we experience in this world.
It’s certainly a challenge for us to think in these terms, especially in today’s secular world. People often refuse to believe things until science can fully explain them. How can our human brains comprehend what the post-resurrection world will be like? Many times, faith requires us to suspend our doubts. We have to accept things that are beyond our human understanding—such as the Eucharist, life after death, healing prayer, etc.
Let us pray: Lord, I pray for the kind of intelligence that Jesus values. Today, give me the grace not to get caught up in the distractions of this world.
