From today’s Scripture: “When the child grew, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, who adopted him as her son and called him Moses…” —Ex 2:10
Although I am not a parent, over the last few years, I have developed friendships with a number of people who are parents. It wasn’t until then that I began to better understand how closely tied a parent’s happiness is to the well-being of their children. My parent friends are constantly thinking about their children, even after their children become adults and have their own children. I think of how many parents will tell their young children, “If you get lost, go find another mom or dad.” Or when you’re at an event and a child calls for his mom, all the moms turn and look.
This Scripture passage reminds me of these stories because Moses’ biological mother gave him up twice to ensure he would have a better life. Parenting involves so much sacrifice, so much self-giving out of love. Through this mother’s sacrifice, the Israelites were able to begin their journey to freedom from slavery. What a gift loving parents are to the world.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, help me to love others with a parents’ heart, to put the well-being of others before my own, even when it hurts.
