From today’s Scripture: “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house.” —Mt 13:57

I can imagine what Jesus might have felt, being rejected by his own people for speaking what they didn’t understand or want to understand. How could the son of a carpenter have so much wisdom?

I remember when I was little and not being able to speak English for the first few months of kindergarten, how isolated I felt from my classmates. Once I learned the language, we could understand each other, but with some there was still some rejection for being different. It seems that at times, we too can reject our brothers or sisters in Christ because we don’t understand or can’t relate to them.

God, through our baptism, has called all of us to be prophets, to speak on behalf of God, not only through words but with actions.

Let us pray: Jesus, we ask that we can be prophets as you called us to in baptism, to speak of your kingdom through how we treat others.
