Speak the truth

From today’s Scripture: Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” —Mt 14:8

Be faithful! John the Baptist is quite a character in scripture. Described as a wild man in a hairshirt eating locusts and honey, Christians see him also as the last prophet. He proclaimed the coming of the Lord no matter what stood in his way. He also spoke truth to power.

Levitical law forbade King Herod from being married to his own half-brother’s sister, and John told him so. Herod locked John up for this, and eventually had him beheaded. Speaking the truth doesn’t always end pleasantly, but it is always right.

Let us pray: God, give me faith to say and do what is right at all times, regardless of the consequences.
