From today’s Scripture: “I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.”—Is 50:6
This is from the third of the four “Servant-of-the-Lord” songs in Isaiah looking ahead to the suffering of Jesus. His personal suffering is beyond any suffering I have experienced, even beyond anything I can imagine, not even shielding my face from being spit on like Jesus was. What humiliation, beyond my imagining, but good for me to try to visualize how much Jesus is willing to suffer for me.
Let us pray: Jesus, thank you for your willingness to suffer so much for me. Give me the grace to be willing to suffer for others.
