Nativity of St. John the Baptist

Nativity of St. John the Baptist

Prepare the way.

From today’s Scripture: “[They] heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy towards Elizabeth, and they rejoiced with her.”—Lk 1:58

Today we celebrate the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. Jesus’ cousin, John, was born 6 months before Jesus. John’s life was spent preparing the way for Jesus. He lived in the desert, a man strong in faith and rich in humility.

John had his own followers, but he would state of the one who is to come, “I am unworthy to unfasten his sandals.” He never proclaimed himself, and the more he proclaimed Jesus, the more that people would listen.

John spoke the truth. How does my life proclaim the Lord?

Let us pray: Loving Lord, John’s life was a beacon of hope for others. Please help me to grow in that grace. I wish to prepare the way for you.
