Daily Reflection

First Thursday in Advent

Listen and do.

From today’s Scripture: “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.”—(Mt 7:24)

My mother would always tell me, after piano lessons: “You will never play well if you only listen to your teacher play the song, you must practice!” Each time I practiced, the music I produced became stronger and eventually sounded like the song of the teacher.

Jesus tells us, to enter the kingdom of heaven we must be both listeners and doers of his word. We must immerse ourselves in his word to hear his voice, to learn what is right, just, and true. We then must go out and perform the acts of love and mercy he has taught us.

Let us pray: Lord, as I take your word into my heart let it flow out in love, mercy, and care for those in need.
