GLENMARY’S FOURTH OATH

“I am aware that the Glenmary way of life commits me to a special practice of poverty, chastity, obedience, and prayer.” — Glenmary’s Final Oath When a Glenmarian places his hand on the Bible and takes his oath, it includes a special call to prayer. That’s not typical; most religious profess vows or oaths to […]

St. Martin of Tours

From today’s Scripture: “Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.”—Ps 24 I admit that I do not spend much time yearning to see the Lord. Yet, that is what I really want. I want to see the one who loves all the people of the world so deeply, as well as […]

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

From today’s Scripture: “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury.”—Mk 12:43 Widows appear in several of our readings today. Look for them. Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

From today’s Scripture: “His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’”—Jn 2:17 In this well-known Scripture passage, Jesus cleanses the Temple of people who are conducting business in what was supposed to be a house of prayer. The money changers and others were profiting off of the faithful’s desire […]

From today’s Scripture: “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.”—Lk 14:26 Jesus has strong words to share in today’s Gospel passage. Essentially, he’s asking us to be willing to sacrifice everything, even our relationships and […]

31st Tuesday in Ordinary Time

From today’s Scripture: “A man gave a great dinner to which he invited many. When the time for the dinner came, he dispatched his servant to say to those invited, ‘Come, everything is now ready.’ But one by one, they all began to excuse themselves.”—Lk 14:17–18 In the United States, Thanksgiving is one of our […]

St. Charles Borromeo

From today’s Scripture: “Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”—Lk 14:13-14 In Jesus’ time and culture, much like today, banquets were opportunities for hosts […]

From today’s Scripture: “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone! Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.
