From today’s Scripture: “‘He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’ He said in reply, ‘I will not,’ but afterwards he changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, ‘Yes, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did his father’s will?’ They answered, ‘The first.’”  — Matthew 21:28–31a

Sometimes I say yes easily. Yes, Lord, I want to follow you. Yes, I want to serve you. Yes, I want to accompany others in your name. But the Gospel reminds me that my mission cannot be sustained by good intentions alone. Love needs to become presence, listening, service, and concrete self-giving. Today I see myself in the second son, because he begins by saying no, but then reflects, changes, and goes. I, too, can resist, become tired, make mistakes, or feel that I do not have what it takes.

Yet God does not ask for perfection in order to call me; He invites me to allow myself to be transformed and to walk again. My ‘yes’ does not have to be spectacular. It can begin with a person I listen to, a wound I accompany, a responsibility I take on, or a service I carry out with love, even when no one sees it.

Today I ask myself: What area of my life needs to move from words to a concrete and faithful yes?

Let us pray: Lord, turn my words into life. When it is difficult for me to respond, give me the humility to acknowledge it and the courage to try again. May my yes to you be expressed in the way I accompany, listen, serve, and love. Amen.
