From today’s Scripture: “While they were all amazed at his every deed.” — Luke 9:43

While they were all amazed at his every deed, Jesus said to his disciples, “Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.” The disciples were filled with amazement at the signs that Jesus performed. Jesus says, “pay attention” to the wonder-filled disciples as he foretells His Passion. Are we paying attention as missionary disciples? Do we understand the amazing and awesome love God has for us?

Acatamiento is a Spanish word that means to look at something with attention, affection, or awe. St. Ignatius wrote “acatamiento” in his journal to describe his attitude of affectionate awe towards God. Father Greg Boyle, SJ, founder of Homeboys Industries, said, “It is the ability to stand in awe of what the poor have to carry, rather than stand in judgment of how they carry it.” This attitude helps me to see my brothers and sisters, especially those on the margins, in a radiant light which leaves me in wonder and makes me healthier. Are we living in affectionate awe? Do we have a disposition of acatamiento?

Let us pray: Merciful Lord, fill me with amazement, wonder, and affectionate awe. Take away any judgment and give me understanding to follow in Your footsteps.
