From today’s Scripture: “Everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.”  — Matthew 19:29

I believe many Glenmary missioners can relate to today’s reading from St. Matthew.  All of us have given up home and family to respond to our call to serve in rural mission areas of the United States. Places that we had never been to previously and usually never heard of until we joined Glenmary. Yet, we have all received a generous welcome from the people we serve. A foretaste of what we hope to “inherit” in eternal life. For me, this foretaste leads me to reflect on what else I am being asked to give up in order to be totally dependent on God rather than counting on my own gifts and strengths.

Let us pray: Lord, I have given up so much already, and I wonder what else you will ask of me. Give me the courage to trust fully in you.
