19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

From today’s Scripture: “Beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Mt 14:30

I have to admit, this is one of my favorite passages. Yes, I love Christmas, I rejoice in the Resurrection, but there’s something about St. Peter’s great moment of doubt that I resonate with. At Peter’s age, I was impulsive; I took more than one deep breath and jumped off the boat! Then maybe I had second thoughts.

Those second thoughts, those moments of doubt, are God’s gateway into our lives. These are the moments when we let go of our cockiness, our facile certainty, our overconfidence in ourselves and cry out, “Lord, save me!” They are moments of grace, whether or not we realize it at the time. Jesus is always there, arm outstretched, accepting our inflated egos, urging us to step out in faith, keeping us safe as we do so.

Let us pray: Keep me humble, dear Lord. Help me to see less of me and more of you in all of my encounters today.
