From today’s Scripture: “But he said in reply to the one who told him, ‘Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?’ And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.’” — Mt 12:48-50

Last April, two girls received the sacrament of Baptism in our church. The community celebrated this special occasion with great joy. But most importantly, it reminded us that baptism ushers us into a new reality: that of being children of the same Father and brothers and sisters in him. These girls will have the opportunity to grow and strengthen their faith within the community, looking to the example of others as we strive each day to do God’s will in our lives.

If we remain mindful of our baptism, we will recognize that we have but one Father, God, and that we ought to support one another as brothers and sisters. It also reminds us to help the needy, the hungry, and the abandoned, for they, too, are our brothers and sisters. Our lives will find true meaning when we do God’s will.

Let us pray: Lord, help me recognize you in the people I will meet today. I want to encounter you and listen to you.
