16th Monday in Ordinary Time

From today’s Scripture: “Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.’ He said to them in reply, ‘An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the prophet.’” — Mt 12:38-39

I recently spoke with an acquaintance who has distanced himself from the Catholic Church for nearly two years. When I asked him why he had drifted away, he replied very seriously: “Because I asked God for a miracle, and he didn’t grant it. I was certain he would but that didn’t happen; he didn’t listen to me. I trusted in him, yet things like this happen to me, while people who don’t believe in him are doing better than I am.”

Often, like those Pharisees, we want to see immediate signs, miracles, or quick answers to our prayers in order to trust in God; otherwise, we turn away from him. We make demands of God instead of placing our lives in his hands and thanking him for the blessings he bestows upon us.

Let us pray: Lord, help me to believe in you without waiting for tangible signs to feel your great love and mercy in my life and to thank you for all the blessings I receive from you each day.
