From today’s Scripture: “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”—Alleluia verse

God is constantly speaking to us, but are we open to listening to God? How do we hear God’s voice? God speaks to us through creation. God speaks to us through our life experiences. God speaks to us through the people around us.

When I was stationed in a Glenmary parish with a university, I would often get questions late at night from students who were writing their papers. I got one call from a man who asked what the Church’s teaching was on suicide. After answering him and hanging up, I wondered if he was thinking of suicide. I called him back and found out that he was. My action was listening to God, and it saved the man’s life.

A philosophy professor once told us in class: “Always be open to the possibility of being spoken to.” God is always speaking. Listen carefully.

Let us pray: O God, today we open our ears to hear you and our hearts to receive your love. May we respond to what we hear you say to us.
