From today’s Scripture: “Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few, pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers, into his harvest.’”—Mt 9:37-38

As I read this passage, the hymn “Here I am Lord” comes to mind. “I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry…whom shall I send?”

Jesus tells his disciples that there is a plentiful harvest with few laborers to bring in the harvest. His first instruction to them is to pray to the Father to send laborers into the harvest.

We have many lost and troubled people in our world today looking for something to hold on to that will bring hope into their lives. They are in need of someone to share the love of Christ with them. Who are these laborers? Our first thoughts are the need for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Yes, that is a desperate need, and we should be praying fervently for an increase in vocations. We must not forget that by virtue of our baptism we, too, are called to be laborers for the harvest. When praying for laborers to be sent, ask the Father, “Is it I Lord?”

Let us pray: Lord, hear our prayer for more laborers for your harvest. Open our hearts to the needs of those around us. Give us the courage and grace to respond to your call to be laborers for the harvest.
