From today’s Scripture: “For it is love that I desire, not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”—Hos 6:6
Throughout the Scripture readings for this week, we have seen repeated references to God’s desire for love and fidelity rather than burnt offerings and sacrifices. This is an important theme to think about, for we can each become trapped in the same net. We can go through the motions of attending Mass and Confession regularly, tithing, volunteering, and so on without developing a true relationship with God.
God wants to be known and to know us intimately. The Mass, Confession and other pious traditions can help us draw closer to God, but they will remain empty if they are done for appearances or to tick off a list of required practices. We see a clear example of this in the Gospel reading for today as well, where the Pharisee affirmed himself for his righteous living, but condemned the tax collector humbly praying nearby. And yet, it was the humble tax collector who was justified in the eyes of the Lord. What is motivating your prayer practices and service to others today? Are they helping you draw closer to the Lord or further away?
Let us pray: Lord, help me to cultivate an attitude of prayer and service that brings me closer to you.
