Second Wednesday of Lent

From today’s Scripture: “Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?” —Mt 20:22

Every time we go to Mass we drink from the chalice. During this Lenten season, we can take time to reflect on what that means. Jesus had to tell his Apostles multiple times in many different ways, and in today’s Scripture he asks them point blank, “Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?” He also told them, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.”

If we drink from the chalice, we are drinking the blood of Christ and participating in his death and resurrection. Are we also willing to participate in the building of the Kingdom of God, putting ourselves in service to others?

Let us pray: Loving God, as we consume you and grow closer to you, help us to transform our hearts so that we may become servant to all.
