From today’s Scripture: “But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin.”—Mk 3:29
One of the beauties of being a priest is witnessing how God’s people thirst for knowledge about the Scripture. I want to share an encounter I had one time. It was a snowy winter in Tennessee when I came for Sunday Mass as usual. On this day, Judith, one of our loving parishioners, met me at the door and asked me, “Father Joe, what does sin against the Holy Spirit mean?” This question gave us an opportunity to reflect on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1864.
We learned together that there is no limit to the mercy of God as we journey to heaven here on earth. Then also we learned that we have a role to cooperate with God’s mercy and grace. We have a role to accept God’s mercy, to repent and accept the forgiveness given to us by the Holy Spirit. Refusing God’s mercy, graces, and forgiveness is sinning against the Holy Spirit.
Let us pray: God the Father of Mercies, you always pour sufficient graces to all your children for the salvation and well-being of our lives. Help me recognize and accept your graces and refuse everything that leads me to the darkness of sin. Amen.
