From today’s Scripture: “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt …”—Mt 2:13

In the Gospel reading, we can imagine the joy of Mary and Joseph as they watched the excitement of the shepherds celebrating the birth of Jesus. How startling a change to find themselves soon after the visit, fleeing to the safety of Egypt.

We lived in Ohio when I was a child. I can remember the many times my parents rushed my baby brother to the hospital due to respiratory emergencies. The doctors finally told my parents to move to a warmer climate if they wanted their little one to survive. My father set off to Georgia to find work and a place for us to live. When he returned he sold the farm and packed his six children and wife into the station wagon and off we went.

In remembering this story, I see the faith and trust Joseph and my father had.

Would I have the same trust and faith? The trust to leave family and friends for the unknown and the faith to know all will be well because God awaits me in the new? As a Glenmary sister with community support—yes. As a single adult—probably after googling information for days, weeks, or maybe a year or two. As a parent, to protect my children, I pray I would.

Let us pray: Lord, help me to grow in my faith and trust of your love for me. When you call me into new situations, give me the courage just to go! Amen.
