From today’s Scripture: “He called ten of his servants and gave them ten gold coins and told them, ‘Engage in trade with these until I return.’”—Lk 19:13

In today’s Gospel, the king rewards two of his servants that earned additional gold coins and punishes the one that acted out of fear and buried his coin. At first glance it’s a challenge to understand what Jesus is driving at. The nobleman seems to be harsh to the poor servant who only was given one coin. It’s not the sort of parable we associate with a loving Jesus.

One way to understand the parable is that Jesus is the king and the gold coins are the gifts of the Lord. God has given us all coins. All of us have different gifts, and Jesus is telling us to be fearless and invest our gifts in spreading the Gospel.

Jesus doesn’t want us to squander our talents by burying them away. If we accept Jesus as our king, we must be willing to risk our investments for him, not bury them in fear.

Let us pray: Lord, help me overcome my fears to fearlessly invest my gifts to further the kingdom of God.
