From today’s Scripture: “And he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me.’”—Lk 16:24
Today’s Gospel is a famous one, called the Parable of Lazarus and Dives. Actually the rich man is never named; indeed he is each of us. All the more so for us praying on the internet. We likely are people of privilege.
We, like Dives (Latin for “rich man”), easily think of the people around us as lesser than us. We probably don’t have servants, but we really don’t pay those who serve us in grocery stores, drive-thrus, or restaurants so well.
Today’s Gospel challenges us to think harder. Today, look at the people who will serve you, wherever you go. How can you consider them more as people, less as objects, as lesser people?
Let us pray: Today, God, open my eyes. Give me your eyes, those that see the infinite worth of every person I encounter. Amen.
