24th Wednesday in Ordinary Time

OT Summer Email Header 2025-3

From today’s Scripture: “We played the flute for you, but you did not dance. We sang a dirge, but you did not weep.”—Lk 7:32

Life has seasons. There will always be a flute being played and a dirge being sung. But there are moments when one is louder and more frequent than the other. How we respond accordingly to these cycles not only forms our religious principles, but also contributes to the quality of our relationship with God and others.

Today, we are invited to list and celebrate the sound of the flute. It may be the birth of a child, a promotion at work, a neighbor’s random act of kindness, or a friend’s unexpected visit. We dance to its rhythms in gratitude. But we are also called to face the dirge being chanted. It may be a death in the family, a loss of a relationship, lack of repentance, or the inability to forgive. We embrace its sound in mourning.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, help me to respond accordingly to the seasons of life that bring both sounds of a flute and a dirge. Amen!
