From today’s Scripture: “Moses said to the people: ‘Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone! Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today. Drill them into your children. Speak of them at home and abroad, whether you are busy or at rest. Bind them at your wrist as a sign and let them be as a pendant on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.’”—Dt 4:4-9
These words are very important to our Jewish brothers and sisters. It is often referred to as the Shema prayer (which means “Listen”). Many have a Mezuzah on their door post with these words inside it. It is important to remember that there is only one God. That God is personally interested in us, and he has done great things for us. The natural response to that is love—a full and complete love that comes from the heart and the soul and is full of strength. Moses insisted on the people remembering these words, because it is easy to forget God and be pulled in many other directions.
Let us pray: Lord, help us to be focused on you. Help us to return your love for us by opening our hearts in love to you.
