From today’s Scripture: “But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and lead the children of Israel out of Egypt?’” —Ex 3:11

I think many of us have struggled with a feeling of being unworthy or unqualified to take on something that is way outside our comfort zone. Moses certainly has the right to feel this way—God is calling him to lead the Israelites out from under the multigenerational oppressive political regime of Egypt. That’s an overwhelming task!

But God says, “I will be with you.” This emphasizes that the God of Moses is relational, which was so different than how people of those times related to their pagan gods. Perhaps that is why Moses questioned how he alone could do it—he didn’t expect God to be with him in the struggle. And the emphasis on God being with us, intentionally, is so great, that it’s even the meaning of one of the names for Jesus—Emmanuel.

Through Jesus, God became one of us and one with us. Perhaps if we could fully understand that we are not alone in our struggles, then we too could accomplish seemingly impossible things as Moses did. For God is with us.

Let us pray: Jesus, Emmanuel, help me to believe in you, and that you are with me when I feel most alone and not up to the task. For in you, I am made strong.
