From today’s Scripture: “Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.”—Jn 15:5

Many of us feel pressured to do everything on our own. Work, school, family obligations, and so on. Yet Jesus makes it abundantly clear: “Without me you can do nothing.” This may sound self-defeating. What do you mean, I can do nothing? Doesn’t my effort count for something?

But Jesus does not expect us to do everything by ourselves. He encourages us to remain close to him and to accept his accompaniment on life’s journey. In the midst of the joys and challenges of our daily lives, Jesus is there. In remaining closely connected with Jesus, we are able to bear more fruit for the kingdom of God than we would ever be able to on our own.

Let us pray: Jesus, encourage us to draw ever closer to you as we seek to build the kingdom of God, not through our efforts alone, but with your abundant help.
