From today’s Scripture: “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.”—Jn 3:36
In today’s first reading a high priest of the Sanhedrin tells the apostles to stop preaching and testifying about Jesus. They reply, “We must obey God rather than men.” Their faith and belief in the Risen Lord won’t allow them to stop.
In the Gospel, Jesus contrasts believing in God to disobeying God. Jesus is offering eternal life and only asking for trust, belief, and faith. Do we trust in God enough to turn to him in and especially in times of need? How does our belief in God affect the choices we make? Whose voices are influencing our decision about faith?
Thinking of the times we have trusted in God and listened to his voice, we can see that our good choices have strengthened our faith and deepened our belief in God. Our times of sin have led us in the opposite direction. Jesus is gently calling us back and only asking us to believe in him.
Let us pray: O God of love and mercy, I can see throughout Scripture how trustworthy you are. You have always been there for your people and have always been there for me. I will look for ways today to make choices that will lead me closer to you.
