From today’s Scripture: “To do your will, O my God, is my delight… May all who seek you exult and be glad in you.”—Ps 40:9, 17
We have so much access to “bad news” that it can be easy to discount the prayer of the psalmist. The author teaches us that doing God’s will and seeking God results in delight and gladness. No less than St. Pope John XXIII remarked that he expects to find happiness in this world as well as in the next.
No doubt that even saints had moments when doing God’s will did not feel like exultation at all. Think also of Jesus in agony on the eve of his murder. Take a moment today to consider the ways in which the God for whom you seek desires to let happiness enter into your life.
Let us pray: Lord, we live between the “already” (the Incarnation) and the “not yet”. We do not yet know eternal happiness. May we be conscious that we are meant by you for delight and gladness.
