From today’s Scripture: “Then Paul stood up at the Areopagus and said: ‘You Athenians, I see that in every respect you are very religious. For as I walked around looking carefully at your shrines, I even discovered an altar inscribed, “To an Unknown God.” What therefore you unknowingly worship, I proclaim to you.’” —Acts 17:22-23
In today’s first reading, St. Paul is touring Athens and notices the shrines to the various Greek gods. Just in case the Greeks have missed one, they hedged their bets by creating a shrine to an unknown god. St. Paul recognizes their spiritual hunger and preaches the Christian message leaning on the Holy Spirit to open their hearts. Some scoff at his message, but he has some success in converting others.
The Gospel reading continues to build towards Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Jesus tells the apostles that the Spirit will “guide you to all the truth.” We can see the Spirit in action in Athens with Paul.
Let us pray: Holy Spirit, as you repeatedly tell me, there is no need to be afraid. I am listening for your voice, and I trust you to lead me.
