From today’s Scripture: “I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.” —Jn 14:26
This is one of those readings that makes me realize how shocking some of Jesus’ teachings were to the apostles. I have to wonder, did this help or hinder the apostles’ understanding? I can see Thomas thinking, “The Holy What?” The rabbis never mentioned the Holy Spirit during lessons in the synagogue. And it’s not something that they could decipher like a Miss Marple mystery. No, it’s an understanding that will arrive with tongues of fire in that upper room on Pentecost Sunday.
Let us pray: Dear God, help me understand what I’m called to do and to be open to receiving the Holy Spirit to help me to understand.
