From today’s Scripture: “We are of the same nature as you, human beings. We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from these idols to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them.” —Acts 14:15

These words are spoken by Paul and Barnabas as they seek to evangelize the people of Lystra. Although they were being threatened with stoning by both the Gentiles and the Jews, Paul and Barnabas continue to share the Good News. When people mistakenly compare them to the pagan gods Zeus and Hermes after they heal a man, Paul and Barnabas remind their listeners that they are ordinary human beings like everyone else, not gods.

How easy it would have been to capitalize on that mistake and leave the difficult life of itinerant preaching in the name of Jesus behind! But Paul and Barnabas did not choose the easier road. Indeed, their example encourages each of us, as fellow ordinary human beings, to turn away from our own idols and proclaim the Good News. We each have a Lystra and people who may only encounter God through us. Which path will you choose?

Let us pray: Lord, we thank you for the courageous witness of all those who have sacrificed their lives to proclaim the Good News to the world. Give us the strength to follow their example and find ways to help others encounter you in the ordinary moments of the day.
