From today’s Scripture: “He said, ‘I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.’’—Lk 21:3-4
Today’s gospel is the familiar story of the widow that gave a small amount even though she has very little. It’s a story of the generosity of the widow as much as it is about her faith that God will provide. However, as it was pointed out to me a few years ago, it is also a story of how Jesus views your gift. Had Jesus not commented on the widow’s donation, if any of the apostles had even noticed the widow, their response would have probably been a shrug. What’s the use of 2 small coins? However, Jesus makes it clear that he is after hearts, not coins. That fact that she sacrifices from her small amount was worth much more to Jesus than those that gave larger amounts.
Let us pray: Jesus, help us to share our gifts of time, talent, and treasure generously. Whatever we give, let us give out of love of the Lord and not our self-gratification.
