29th Thursday in Ordinary Time

Ordinary Time_Summer-3

From today’s Scripture: “Jesus said to his disciples: ‘I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!’”—Lk 12:49

Today’s Scripture seems to contradict that common image of Jesus as peace and love. This reference to being set on fire and ablaze does not refer to one that destroys but, rather, implies a fire that can purify. All of us need to be purified in order to grow closer to God.

Today and every day I need to take some time to reflect on when I feel God most present in my life and when I feel separated from God. What in my life is holding me back from growing closer to God and from being a more dedicated follower of Christ? What needs to be burnt off or purified?

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, let me be blazing with the light of the Gospel, and with the joy of sharing it, in actions and word, with everyone I meet today.
