From today’s Scripture: “You cannot serve both God and mammon.” —Lk 16:13
Jesus warns against disordered attachment to wealth. God gives us created things to enjoy and use in service of God, which is our grateful response to God’s goodness. If we love things with the love owed the Creator of things, then we have a disordered attachment. We are possessed by our possessions rather than possessing them and serving God with them.
When people amass wealth for themselves, that benefits themselves. When people share their wealth, it benefits others. Charity pleases God. What matters most in this matter of mammon is not how much is gathered but how much is scattered.
Let us pray: Most gracious maker of all things, help me by your grace to use created goods to serve you who are all good, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
