From today’s Scripture: “Let no one have contempt for your youth, but set an example for those who believe, in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.”—1 Tim 4:12
While at the dinner table, I randomly asked Rosalina, our 6-year-old feisty foster daughter, one word she would use to describe me to others. Laughing, she answered, “Grumpy!” “No, I am not,” I quickly protested. Laughing again, she cited some examples. Okay, I am guilty! But I thought she was too busy and distracted to even pay attention to what I was saying and doing. Despite those occasional mishaps, I hope we set a good example she could lean on for life.
Our Christian discipleship resembles parenting: Setting an example is a 24-hour commitment that requires vigilance and prudence. In our polarized world, it is important more than ever that our “speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity” do not sow more hatred and division, but rather help lead others to Christ, the Good Shepherd, who desires that all may be saved.
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, help me persevere in leading others to you with my speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. Amen!
