From today’s Scripture: “Raising his eyes toward his disciples Jesus said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.’” —Lk 6:20
Jesus was stripped of his garments, of his pride, of love—our love. He possessed nothing but owned all—the Father’s love. Jesus tells us not to be solicitous about our food, our clothing, or our life. The poverty he asks of us is detachment from ourselves and from the craving for prestige, position, and self-righteousness; to root out of us all trace of envy, the vice of pride, and the longing to exalt ourselves. Jesus is thirsty for us.
In contemplation I whisper, “A little bit of me, a little bit of Thee; less of me, more of Thee; nothing of me, all of Thee.” How difficult it is to deny myself, take up my cross, and follow Christ. The Lord looks at me with love.
Let us pray: Lord, we come to you with a humble heart. Teach us to empty ourselves so we can be rich in you.
