From today’s Scripture: “He taught them on the sabbath, and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority.” — Lk 4:31

In today’s Gospel, Jesus expels a demon with the power of his word. Naturally, the people were amazed with this display of Jesus’ authority. Not only has he cleansed the man of his unclean spirit, he did so with authority that the crowd had never experienced.  They had never heard someone speak with such authority.

I used to wonder exactly what Luke meant when he wrote “…because he spoke with authority.” Finally, it was explained to me that the crowd was used to the rabbis often citing other rabbis when teaching in the synagogue. Jesus broke this mold by teaching with a unique authority. Think about how Jesus would often begin his teachings with “You have heard it said… but I say to you..” Not only was he exerting his authority, he provided profound insights into the Scriptures, revealing deeper meanings.

As I reflect on this passage, I feel guilty that I don’t experience the amazement of the words of Jesus. Do I make the effort to understand the meaning of the words that I have heard so often?

Let us pray: Dear Jesus, open my ears so I hear your words in the Gospel in amazement like those in today’s Gospel. Let your words enter my heart and reveal to me what I don’t understand.
