From today’s Scripture: “When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say.”—Mt 10:19
I have always been someone who thinks carefully before speaking. I like to know what I am going to say, how I am going to say it, and what I definitively mean by my words before I say them.
This line from Matthew’s Gospel is tough for me, because I always worry about what I am going to say. For example, it took me weeks to decide what to say for these reflections.
I don’t think Jesus is asking his disciples to stop thinking carefully about their words. Rather, he is reminding them that there is only so much worrying they can do before they simply have to trust that he will give them what they need.
This verse is difficult for me because I worry deeply about my words. Yet perhaps that is exactly why I need to hear it.
Let us pray: Lord, help me to remember that not every word needs to be perfect. Give me the confidence to trust that you can work through my efforts, however imperfect they may be.
