From today’s Scripture: “And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.”—Rom 5:5
When I read this Scripture passage, I find myself at a crossroads of two reactions. How does hope, an emotion, not produce disappointment from time to time? We have all likely had moments where we worked hard for something, or waited patiently for something. And it didn’t work out. We could protest and say, hope is only a fickle emotion, and there’s so much in our negative world today that can quickly extinguish it!
But what if the word hope was capitalized, and was found to be a person? Through this Scripture passage and others, we learn that the source of true Hope is synonymous with Jesus Christ. It comes from the inexhaustible love God has for all creation. And as we learn in First Corinthians, “Love never fails.” What greater source of hope can we have then God’s unique and unrepeatable love for each one of us?
Let us pray: Lord, help me to find hope in you during the dark moments of life. This Lent, give me opportunities to share the gift of hope with others in need.
