Watch Father Chet’s Christmas reflection here.
One of our most creative preachers in Glenmary was a man named Father Charlie Hughes. He was my director in theology. And I remember this time of year that he gave us a sermon one time that went something like this.
“What would happen if, all of a sudden, you learned that the story of Jesus was just a dream? It was a fantasy. It never existed.”
He went on to say, “you know, even if that were true, what a fantastic dream it would be.”
Just imagine: a God who loves us so much he took on our lowly condition. He lived with us, walked and talked with us, healed us, and taught us how to love one another. And that ultimately he showed us the greatest sign of his love, his death on the cross.
Well, it’d be a beautiful dream if it didn’t happen. But what about if, in fact, did?
And that’s what we celebrate this Christmas. Not a dream, but that reality. Jesus Christ born among us.
The Glenmary Home Missioners try to share this good news message of Jesus and his love for us. It comes home to us at Christmas time, even in the midst of many distractions. That is the reality of the season that we celebrate.
No wonder it’s been called the greatest story ever told.
On behalf of the Glenmary Home Missionaries, we wish you a beautiful Christmas season. Thank you for all your support and prayers, and we look forward to continue collaborating with you in the New Year. God bless.
