Sts. Simon & Jude

Ordinary Time_Summer-3

From today’s Scripture: “He called his disciples…”—Lk 6:13

One thing I learned early on in my priesthood was how popular today’s saint, St. Jude, is for many people, especially for mothers. Why might this be the case?

St. Jude is known as the patron of lost causes. Many of the mothers I talk to have seen their own children fall on hard times: drugs, depression, failed relationships, atheism, cynicism, unemployment, and more.

These mothers care so deeply for their children, but they are at a loss as to what to do.

So, the mothers come to Mass on this special day, they light a candle, and they pray for St. Jude’s intercession for their children—the ones who seem lost—and they beg God for God’s help.

We each have a lost cause in life (sometimes it is ourselves). But, with God, and through the saints, nothing is lost.

Let us pray: Through the intercession of St. Jude, patron of lost causes, today may all the troubled ones of the world find faith, hope, and love.
