St. Luke

Our Lady of the Fields-3 (1)

From today’s Scripture: “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” —Lk 10:2

From the beginning Father William Howard Bishop, founder of Glenmary, was inspired by the image of Jesus the Good Shepherd. It could be argued that from here came Glenmary’s mission to minister to the poor and rejected in rural America. Father Bishop was convinced and dedicated to bringing back the lost sheep in the rural parts of the United States. It could be said that Father Bishop took the image of the Shepherd in a literal sense and therefore formed a vision of bringing the Catholic Church to rural America.

Just as Christ in the image of the Good Shepherd goes out of his way to find the lost sheep, the same can be said of Our Lady of the Fields, the patroness Father Bishop chose for Glenmary. She too restlessly goes out to the fringes of society to look for those who are rejected. She advocates not just for farmers, but for immigrants, refugees, and especially those who are marginalized.

Let us pray: Jesus, help me today to be your laborer. Inspire in me the fervor to bring your word to those who thirst for truth.
