From today’s Scripture: “Joseph…was a righteous man…”—Mt 1:19

To be called “righteous” in Biblical terms was about as high a compliment you could wish. Joseph brought his share of goodness to the Holy Family. As challenging as her calling was, Mary had Joseph in her corner.

If any typical father feels the pressure of providing for and protecting his family, Joseph must have felt the weight of extraordinary responsibility. While Joseph is often portrayed as elderly (suggesting why Jesus had no siblings), I like the portrayal of him as a young man, loving Mary and deeply committed to his mission in God’s plan, a righteous man indeed.

Let us pray: Lord, thank you for St. Joseph’s “Yes” to your invitation from the angel.  We pray for all fathers this day.
