From today’s Scripture: “Do not love the world or the things of the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father in not in him.”—1 Jn 2:15 

St. John’s letter challenges us to put first things first. I think our tendency is to try to love both our Father and the things of the world. After all, the things of the world, like our social standing, the external appearance of our house, our car, our knowledge, how we are dressed, or the activities we consider urgent are not wrong in themselves. So we put them at the same level of importance as our connectedness with God, and God is no longer the center of our life.

Let us pray: O God, thank you for loving me. I do want to love you above all things. I’m sorry that I let “things” become more important sometimes and I lose you as my center.  Forgive me, and help me.
