From today’s scripture: “I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”  — Mk 6:25

This feast is also called the “Beheading of St. John the Baptist,” because he spoke the truth to King Herod: his marriage to Herodias was unlawful. Herod did not want to kill John because he feared him and knew he was a righteous man. But he was trapped by his oath, his guests, and his pride. So, he ordered him killed to save face.

This is one of the Gospels’ clearest images of how lust, pride, political fear, and hatred for truth lead us to kill those who stand for the truth. Jesus later calls John “more than a prophet” and the greatest born of women.

What are we seeking in this world? The approval of men or the approval of God? Let the truth continue to be our guide, and let us never be tempted to revenge in the manner of Herodias.
