That encounter is at the heart of our incarnational, eucharistic Catholic faith; at the heart of our Glenmary charism; and at the heart of Glenmary’s social justice ministry. As the Catechism states: “The Eucharist commits us to the poor.” (no. 1397) The poor and vulnerable are a primary priority for Glenmary Home Missioners.
Social justice ministry flows from Glenmary’s love for rural and small-town America. Our founder Father William Howard Bishop enjoined us to “adopt all the people of your mission area as your own.” We reach out to people in need in our mission counties, and work to change unjust conditions that contribute to their suffering.
Glenmary’s Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) ministry is grounded in Catholic social teaching, a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. The JPIC Commission and office help to build the capacity of Glenmary mission parishes to engage in social ministry locally.
JPIC contributes to the broader Church’s social mission by collaborating on pressing social issues with national Catholic social ministry organizations, dioceses, state Catholic conferences, other churches, and other people of good will who share our values. We bring our extensive experience in rural and small town America to that collaboration.

For many years under the legal precedent of Roe vs. Wade, Catholics have been a powerful witness for the Right to Life cause. While Roe has been overturned, the cause of changing hearts and minds in the general population remains. Glenmary Home Missioners support these efforts, as well as efforts...
Glenmary brings our rural and small town experience to our collaboration with various national organizations, including these:
The USCCB’s Migration and Refugee Services serves and advocates for refugees, asylees, migrants, unaccompanied children, and victims of human trafficking.
Glenmary works in areas where the poverty rate is as high as twice the national average, with many residents caught in a cycle of generational poverty. Watch a 3-minute video about poverty in the U.S from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.
The Laudato Si’ Action Platform equips the universal Church and all people of good will to act on Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ encyclical on caring for our common home and his 2023 apostolic exhortation Laudato Deum.
The Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network provides accompaniment, outreach, and spiritual development to migrant farmworkers, many of whom work in Glenmary regions.
The US Bishops’ Respect Life office provides resources to build a culture that protects life from conception to natural death.
The US Bishops’ Civilize It: A Better Kind Of Politics initiative is a response to Pope Francis’ invitation to help bring about a better kind of politics.
