From today’s Scripture: “Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong.”—1 Kgs 3:9
Solomon was a young man who inherited the kingdom from David, his phenomenal powerhouse-leader-warrior-father. God told Solomon in a dream “whatever you ask I shall give you.” He knew that asking for a long life could be a curse, as he would be left to make all the decisions as king and might “screw up royally!” He also realized that vast riches might cause many to be jealous and want to take his throne away from him. So, what would serve him the best if he had to carry on his father’s legacy? Being able to judge a situation. Being able to cut through the petty to get to the pith. Being able to understand and balance justice and mercy. And God was pleased and granted Solomon’s wish.
Let us pray: Lord, help me to take the time I need to evaluate the questions I face with your eyes and heart. Inspire me to balance my decisions as you would have me do.
