Prophecy fulfilled

Today’s O Antiphon: O Root of Jesse’s stem, sign of God’s love for all his people: come to save us without delay!

Jesse was the father of King David, who reigned for about 40 years as king of Israel. God promised David that his throne would last forever (see Samuel 7). But we all know that Israel was actually defeated, the temple David dreamed of was destroyed, and the Jewish people became slaves of Babylon.

This does not look like the throne of David lasting forever! But the story goes on! One thousand years later, an ordinary man we now call St. Joseph was born into Jesse and David’s family line. He married a pregnant woman, and adopted her son. And so Jesus became adopted into the line of David.

Jesus is our true king whose reign exceeds any other. His dominion is spiritual and natural, and as he lives and reigns eternally, he fulfills the prophecy that David’s throne will last forever. God’s word is always true.

Let us pray: God, help me to hold on to your promises even when they seem unlikely. Thank you for being a loyal and faithful God and friend who always keeps your promises.
