First Sunday of Lent

From today’s Scripture: “You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.”—Mt 4:7

In the Appalachian mountains there are still some “snake handling churches” where people sometimes intentionally handle a poisonous rattlesnake or copperhead and will even provoke the snake to bite them to show that they truly have “the faith” — IF they live to tell about it. I was at such a church a few years ago and a friend of mine asked me to come sit up front with him. I replied, “Sam, I am not gonna put my Lord to the test!”

Satan might like for us to provoke the Lord by flirting around with life-or-death issues, but if we do so, would this reveal that I am a disciple of Christ or maybe a disciple of Satan?

Let us pray: Lord, help us not to fear temptation or the tempter but give us a trusting faith in you!
